Cherry Hill Police Department Communications/9-1-1
The
Cherry Hill Police Department recently opened a brand new state-of-the-art communications
center. This center is staffed by 12 full-time dispatchers and call-takers as
well as police officers. The communications center is the hub of a new 800 Mhz
Digital Radio System that was recently installed throughout the Township. This
new system replaces one that is over 15 years old. The communications center
handles more than 125,000 calls each year and is responsible for dispatching Police
Units throughout our community. The communications center also acts as our own
9-1-1 answer point. When a resident of Cherry Hill calls 9-1-1, they are connected
directly with the Cherry Hill Police Department. This provides a significant
advantage in response time to the caller. It is important to note that 9-1-1 calls made from a cellular phone may be picked up by the nearest cellular phone tower and may result in the call being transferred to a different answer point.
Callers utilizing cellular phones should always be sure to quickly provide their location to the dispatcher so that the call may be routed to the appropriate emergency services agency.
Each person responsible for dispatching and/or call taking undergoes mandatory training and refresher courses and is held to the highest professional standards. The department has great confidence in the service provided to a caller seeking assistance.
